Throughout history, the Arctic and polar regions have captivated explorers and adventurers. The unforgiving landscapes and extreme weather make these areas some of Earth’s most challenging places.

Early polar explorers like Roald Amundsen, Robert Falcon Scott, and Ernest Shackleton ignited the spirit of adventure, with their stories of perseverance becoming legendary.

The appeal of Arctic travel lies in the unique landscapes and opportunities to test one’s mettle against nature. These remote areas offer a chance to experience isolation and self-reliance while confronting physical and mental limits.

Inspired by my own 20-year history of operating in these extreme cold environments, I created the Spine Race in the UK. Now, we’re introducing a new challenge in 2024: The Montane Arctic Spine Race.

This expedition-style race begins in Abisko, northern Sweden, and spans 293 miles along the Kungsleden Trail to Hemavan. Participants will access three checkpoints for resupply but must sleep outdoors. They have 192 hours (8 days) to complete the journey, using skis or snowshoes and either pulling a pulk or carrying a backpack.

The shorter Arctic Spine Challenger starts in Abisko, covers 129 miles to Kvikkjokk, and allows 84 hours (3.5 days) for completion.

Solo competitors and teams are welcome, if you want to race solo you will need to have the required skill set to be able to compete safely.

The Arctic Spine Race leads competitors through awe-inspiring landscapes and extreme weather conditions, requiring self-sufficiency and an expedition mindset. Success demands rigorous mental and physical preparation, for those who need it, we will be running a small training camp before the race starts.

The Arctic Spine Race is not to be taken lightly, as it may be the most demanding Spine Race challenge yet. This unforgettable adventure will push participants to discover new depths of personal strength and determination.

Push your limits, marvel at the Arctic’s beauty, and take part in the ultimate expedition-style race.
